HHS IN THE NEWS!!!

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. - They are two students among hundreds at Hudson High School. And they both take responsibility for falling behind as freshman.

"I have no one else to blame but myself," said senior Victoria Santacroce.
Santacroce didn't want to dress out for PE and Matt France struggled with math. Both stopped going to class.
"I was very stubborn," said France.

But the two are now back on schedule and headed toward a diploma. They says it's because of the graduation enhancement program taught by Teresa Caraker.

Students who are behind are identified, then they use an online system to get the credits they need.

"It's not just a matter of sitting on the computer and getting it done. You really need someone to support the student and help them get through the process," said Caraker.

There's been improvement all around Pasco County. But none bigger then at Hudson High School. Graduation rates went from 70% to 85% in just one year.

"We get so bogged down in the numbers. And this year we had great numbers. But really it what's behind it are the students lives that were changed and impacted by what we were able to provide for them," said Caraker.

In the last four years, Pasco County high schools have boosted graduation rates almost 18%.

France says the graduation enhancement program changed his life.
"So many people thought I couldn't do it. The greatest feeling is proving everyone wrong."

Both Matt and Victoria have big plans. Both want to be business owners. Matt in agriculture and Victoria in cosmetology.

And it's a lot more realistic with a high school diploma.

Last Week

It's the last week before break and we only have three days! Yay! BUT........ It's a shortened week and I have to fit in two tests. Which means we will have the nuclear reactions test on Tuesday and the mid-term on Wednesday. If you are going to be absent either one of those days let me know so we can figure out a different time to take the test.

This Week

It's a short week this week.  We only have 2 days, so today is sort of like Thursday even though its really Monday. I like Thursdays better so I'm going think "Thursday" all day.  Today, we are going to learn about the different types of chemical reactions and how to identify them.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, (but kinda like a Friday) we will be doing the polymer lab.  You have to come to school on Tuesday so you can make a slime/putty polymer.  Then it's a 3 day break. I wish you all a nice Thanksgiving!

Paper Plate Atom Project

We made paper plate atoms last week and they are now hanging all around the room!  Everyone did a great job making their atoms by counting and arranging all the beans and peas! Black beans are the protons, pinto beans are the neutrons, and split peas are the electrons.
The finished product.

Have a Great Day!!!

Cheerleading Alumni Night

(for all the parents that are HHS Alumni)

Dear Cobra Alumni Cheerleader,
We are excited to announce the First Cobra Alumni Cheerleading Night!  On October 14, 2011, we are inviting all alumni cheerleaders and coaches to come back to HHS and CHEER THE FIRST HALF of the football game with the cheerleaders.  It is a chance to get together with your friends, share memories, show your Cobra pride and have fun!
All that is required for participation is a small donation to help our organization and athletes.  By donating $25.00 or more you will get FREE admission to the game, a Cobra Alumni t-shirt, and a chance to cheer again!  Any donation amount is appreciated and accepted.  We are using 20 percent of our profits to award a deserving cheerleader a scholarship to a college or university presented during the Night of Excellence.  The remainder of the profits will be used for the HHS Cheerleading team to compete at STATE FINALS!
While the sport of cheerleading is growing in the state of Florida the funds for competition is not.  The FHSAA has a new rule this year requiring every team wishing to compete at Florida State Finals to compete in four regular season competitions, plus Regional and State Finals, more than we have ever competed in during a season.  These competitions can be expensive, ranging from $200.00 per team to $75.00 per cheerleader.  Cheering at the State Finals competition is an honor and awesome experience we look forward to every year, but without your support we will not be able to attend the required competitions.  Please consider donating to this amazing team so we can achieve our goals and have the chance to compete at State Finals 2012.
Sincerely,           Hudson High School 2011-2012 Cheerleading Team
Please visit the school website for more information. http://hhs.pasco.k12.fl.us
RSVP online and mail your donation to HHS. Or fill out the bottom portion and mail it to HHS with your donation.

Class Information

·      Materials to have with you everyday are a blue/black pen or pencil, calculator, 3 ring binder, paper, and book. Materials to bring in on an as needed basis are a highlighter, markers/crayons/colored pencils, and glue.

·      Classroom participation includes all in class assignments, discussions, notes, and daily or weekly work. Work turned in late will have points taken off based on how late the work is turned in.

·      Assessments are very important. The tests will be on any and only the material covered in the book and class. A student may request to retake any test on which the score was an F.  The student must come in for a scheduled 30-minute review prior to retaking the test. If the new score is higher than the original score, the points will be averaged.

·      Quizzes are tools used to help you recall the major focus of the lessons. ALL quizzes are OPEN NOTEBOOK!  The quizzes and tests will be directly related. You should keep the quizzes to study from for the chapter tests. (“Honors” keep all quizzes and tests to study for the semester exam.)

·      Exams will be at the end of each unit. They will consist of multiple choice, short answer, problem, and essay. There will be a mid-term exam at the end of first semester and a final exam at the end of the school year.

·      Homework will be given when needed. Expect homework weekly. Unfinished class work will become homework for completion of the assignment. It is your responsibility to complete the assignment and turn it in on the date due. Work turned in late will have points taken off based on how late the work is turned in.

·      Science Starters are a question asked everyday at the start of the period. The question is the objective from the previous lesson. A correct science starter answer is 1 point extra credit per day. All science starters will be kept in a science notebook that will be stored in the classroom. On Friday there will be a drawing and if the chosen student has all 5 science starter questions and answers they will be awarded a prize. The science starters will be checked for completion the last day of the school week.

·      Lab Behavior.  The science department will also be following a set of lab rules and behavior plan. If there are any behavior issues, lab privileges may be revoked for the year. An alternative assignment will be given for any student not participating in the lab.
